Soma. Soma. Soma.
We used this water filter a lot and completely stopped using bottled water. But OMG those filters were expensive. That's the price for clean water though, right?
Months later I realized that the gunk that was filtering my H20 was petroleum based and that water filters are comprised of as much as 60% plastic. In fact, most water filters are composed of plastic resin mixed with small amounts of carbon. GROSSSS. I was trying to eliminate unnecessary plastic waste by refusing plastic bottles, but I was unknowingly creating a demand for petroleum based products anyway. So… a few months later I came across a Kickstarter campaign for a new, innovative water filter started by the Soma people.
What makes a Soma water filter different than any other water filter? First of all, the filter is 100% compostable and made from Malaysian coconut shells, vegan silk, and food-based PLA plastic. Secondly, the carafe is made from glass, not plastic ((REJOYCE!))
This carafe is really beautiful, ergonomically designed, and lightweight (which makes me a little afraid of breaking it). Also I was pretty pleased with the minimal packaging for such a large glass item.
The negative: I really wish they didn't have a piece of plastic around the carafe when it is shipped to you. It seems like a really a useless addition to their sustainable packaging. Luckily, I was able to recycle it at my local store that accepts plastic packaging. I would prefer to prevent it entirely. Also I was updated that the white cone that holds the filter is plastic. NO! Besides that, i'm really pleased with the product.
