Zero Waste Shopping: A How To Guide

One of the most common questions I get is how to shop in bulk or package free. In this series of videos you will learn how to tare your jars to buy bulk, how to buy liquids in bulk, and how to buy solids in bulk so that you can be prepared to shop Zero Waste anywhere that offers bulk!

IMPORTANT: very often I hear that people feel uncomfortable trying to buy things package free because they are afraid the people will look at them like they are weird, or challenge them. Well, guess what, Zero Waste is NOT the norm and it is likely that people might not know what you are doing.

EMBRACE IT! If someone looks at you when you try to shop Zero Waste, it is most likely because you are the first person that they have ever seen shopping that way and they don't know what you are doing, it's not that they think you are weird! Take this as an opportunity to educate someone or reach out to them and explain what you are doing in a positive way. Remember, the more you shop package free, the more common it will become for stores and other shoppers and the more comfortable others will feel doing it. I believe in living my values, and so I am never afraid of looking different from others, I embrace it!

Zero Waste Holiday Gift Guide

Holidays = excessive presents = excessive waste = tragic sadness = climate change = end of the world. Right? No. Not right. Wrong. Gifting can be fun, waste free, and EASY. Here are some tips for how you can keep your holiday gifts waste-free brought to you by my company, The Simply Co. (use code 'TRASHISFORTOSSERS' for 10% off all orders!)
My first suggestion for zero-waste wrapping? Don't wrap. Seriously, the behind the back, or close your eyes methods are way more fun, easier, and 100% waste free. But if you're gonna wrap- this is what I suggest.
Step 1. Pick out some plants to use later to add a nice touch to your gifts  (you can enjoy them yourself in the meanwhile)
Step 2. Find the perfect upcycled material for your gift. This can include things like newspaper, napkins, kitchen towels, or our favorite furoshiki bags.
Step 3. Wrap up your favorite green product.
Step 4. Add a homemade gift tag or card made out of recycled paper, or cardboard.
Step 5. Use paper tape, hemp, or plants and vines to hold your wrapping together
Step 6. Add the plants you choose to add a nice touch to your gift.
REMEMBER: if you do wrap a present and you want to make sure the wrapping is properly disposed of, take it back! You can use it again or just toss it in the compost bin!
Share Experiences
Instead of buying something, wrapping it, and just handing it over, think about an experience gift that you can give instead. Dinner for two? A show? A day at a museum? Cook dinner for someone? A concert? The options are infinite. That way you can grow memories, not trash
Give Homemade
If an experience gift is not up your alley and you do want to give a physical gift, try a homemade one! On my blog there are many zero waste options for you: body lotion, deodorant, toothpaste, and granola.
Shop Sustainably
If you are neither an experience giver or a DIY'er try shopping green!

1) I'm a little biased --- OBVIOUSLY The Simply Co. has my favorite and most sustainable products. Use code 'TRASHISFORTOSSERS' for 10% off.
2) Life Without Plastic has an assortment of  zero waste essentials like stainless steel airtight storage containers and reusable produce bags.
3) Brush With Bamboo for a bamboo toothbrush packaged in 100% compostable materials.
